Airhead R9T Forks

by Osh Minelian / Friday, 18 January 2019 / Published in Bike Restoration, Blog

BMW R Nine T forks on an Airhead? Really?

So we get a call from a buddy that’s in the bike biz. He asks, ” can you figure out a way to put R Nine T forks on an Airhead. So of course I say yes. My guys often cringe when they hear the YES word because they know we’re about to embark on uncharted territory. I looked far and wide to see if anyone one had done this and found no inspiration. So I said, Ed? send me the R9T wheel, forks and tripples and we’ll see what we come up with.

So the first thing we did was to measure the fork and steering geometry on both front ends to insure we don’t end up with poorly fitting components. I made two drawings and super imposed them on one another to get the picture in my head of the differences so I could design the triple clamps. Turns out that the 9T forks are sorter overall so the triple clamps would have to designed like drop-clamps where the clamping part is lower than the top face of the triples
